growing feijoas in brisbane - is it worth it ?

Mention fejoa and the next word seems to be fruit fly. Has anyone had success with fejoas in Brisbane without added fruit fly ?
Also, which variety of fejoa has the larger greyish more astringent fruit with a thicker skin (as compared with smaller fruit with thinner smoother green skin ) ?

I can't vouch for success in Brisbane but if taking the risk the standard strategy would be to try an early maturing variety. 'Unique' is early, self-fertile and also bluish though it's hard to say whether it's the one you're familiar with.
